As you can see, there are a lot of moving parts. If you were a product manager for a specific automobile brand or were considering customer preferences in mobility, you’d want to do a deep dive across all of these items, and more. Also, you may notice that some of the items are connected. For example, more consumers living in cities who don’t care about car ownership but still have a need to travel have a lot of options these days, including peer-to-peer ridesharing and car-sharing services. Your strategy may be to focus on a transportation network instead of an individual automobile.

From the point of view of financial and business data, your company’s leaders invest heavily in accounting, financial, and other systems, as well as performance metrics that can measure and track activity. As a product manager, you should be aware of and informed on the data and metrics to assess the business and financial health of the company, as well as the business and financial health of its products.

The chart in Figure 7.5 provides this viewpoint and indicates that there were more favorable conditions in the past, and that there are other pressures in the current year.
